William Burton - christening
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 23:43 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am acting on a hunch although believe that the parents of William Burton, born abt 1786/87 in Nuneaton according to Hinckley census 1841-1871 are Joseph Burton and Martha Kirby.  Joseph and Martha were married in Walgrave on Sowe, Warwickshire  on 3rd January 1786 and the first children i find them having commence with James Burton, christened 15th May 1787 in Nuneaton.  They have several children in Nuneaton thereafter.

I believe that William may actually be their first child as there is a possible gap between their marriage at the start of 1786 and the birth of James in mid 1787.  Furthermore, James went on to marry a Sarah and i note that a James and Sarah Burton were witnesses at William's marriage to Mary Morris in Hinckley in 1818.

However, i cannot find a suitable christening for a William Burton to tie in with a 1786/87 birth.  The only christening i have found is for a William Burton in 1791 in Nuneaton - although i have found him elsewhere in Nuneaton (and also a duplicate crossed out in Chilvers Coton!).

Can anyone help me to confirm my hunch?

Thanks in advance.

TB

Hi TB - a 1791christening for a 1787 birth sounds reasonable particularly if there was  a sibling christened then.

Hi Diddy

Whilst the 1791 christening would be reasonable there is another William Burton born in 1791 living in Nuneaton in 1851 (also duplicated as living in Chilvers Coton and crossed out).  I believe the christening relates to this William and sadly not mine.

My William was aged 91 at death on 7th April 1877 indicating a birth year of early 1786.  This would tally with the various census which suggest a birth of 1786/1787.  The William christened in 1791 had several older siblings, including a Gilbert who was christened December 1786 - it would be likely that my William would have been christened at this time had he been related to this family, who appeared to promptly christen their children after birth.

This is what leads me to believe that he may indeed be related to Joseph and Martha Burton - as the sibling names seem to run in the family and William's first child was called Joseph.

I have found Martha living with son James in 1841, aged abt 80 - this would indicate she was born around 1760.  In view of a marriage in 1786, when she would have been around 26, perhaps she was a widow or perhaps she was already with child......

I am therefore wondering if as the marriage between Joseph and Martha took place in Walgrave on Sowe perhaps he was christened someone around there in 1786 before they moved to Nuneaton and had a child there in mid 1787.

Any more thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Regards

TB

ok:

SOWE, a parish partly in the city of Coventry, and partly in the hundred of Knightlow, county Warwick, 3 miles N.E. of Coventry, its post town. The village is situated on the river Sow, from which it takes its name. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in the collieries and in ribbon weaving. This parish is also known by the name of Walsgrave-upon-Sow, its original name. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Stoke, in the diocese of Worcester. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There are National and infant schools. The Independents and General and Particular Baptists have chapels. There is a new parochial school at Hawkesbury-Sow. The Earl of Craven is lord of the manor.

Thanks Diddy

Sadly Martha appears to have died in 1845 in Nuneaton and so i have been unable to establish her place of birth.  However, she listed herself as born in County on the Nuneaton, Warwickshire 1841 Census.

Looking at the Sowe info , it does not appear to be a centre for either family as there are a limited number of Burton's and no other Kirby's.  Perhaps they came from outside of Sowe - or even eloped as it is not a million miles away from Nuneaton.
