Thanks for that Gaie-well they're not there in 1871 either!

There's also an Elizabeth Sarah Ann Gutteridge baptised at St Andrews Lambeth on 6th March 1867 with parents Thomas(he's a labourer) and Sarah Ann .It says PB in the margin, which I take to mean Private Baptism, often done if the baby is not expected to live(although my gran lived to 88 after hers!)

The address is 10 Milne Place,I wonder if this is also your family?

Off to see if they are at that address in 1871......but somehow I doubt it  :(

Wow what great information! Thank you! Sad about the little girl though....

Yes I can't seem to locate any of the family in the 1871 census, maybe they left the country ( ??? ).

I have a feeling the surname may have been changed prior to 1861? I'm not sure if Thomas was born with the spelling "Gutteridge", might be why I can't find him in 1841/51 census. I get a few results for Gutridge, Gutterdge, Godderidge, and Goddard which I'm following up on to see if any are close matches.

I agree that they're hard to trace pre-1861.  I think you're going to have to purchase a child's birth certificate in order to ascertain Sarah/Sarah Ann's maiden name and take things further back. I'm not sure which son is your ancestor - but here's one which looks a good match for Charles born 3 March 1855.

Birth Jun qtr 1855

Charles GUTTERIDGE

St George Southwark 1d 120

...and for George born 26 March 1860:

Birth Jun qtr 1860

George GUTTERIDGE

St Saviour Southwark 1d 6
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Just found John's baptism too  ;D

At Christ Church Southwark on 29th Jan 1860 with a birth date of 16th Sept 1849 in the margin. Parents Thomas a brass finisher! and Sarah, but the same address of 14 Boddys Bridge clinches it.

I wonder what made them decide to baptise John at age 11 and not before?

John's birth....

John Frederick GUTTERIDGE in Holborn in Dec 1849 ref 2 page 138

Charles is my Great-Great Grandfather  :) I think I may have to use that option of purchasing the birth certificate - thank you for the advice!

Just an update as I have new information (sorry it took so long!).

I ordered a birth certificate for Charles back on April 12th and it finally arrived here in Australia.

Sarah's maiden name is Craighead. With this information I've been able to trace her parents (John and Sarah Craighead) and give me some more information  :) :)

Thank you for suggesting to order the birth certificate - didn't realize how helpful it would be. I am now thinking about doing it for a few other family members where I have dead ends for.
