Teaurn, you are not sad, I too have membership to both Ancestry & Findmypast.  Costly it may be but I find they work very well in conjunction with each other.

I often find a record on one and not on the other.  Also I find that the search is easier on FindMyPast in some instances.

And I love the Printout you get from FindMyPast.

But Ancestry has far more records and I am eagerly awaiting the Post Office Archives.  Unknown to me when I joined Royal Mail in 1980 I did not know just how many of my ancestors had worked for the Post Office, from very early on, when postmen were known as Letter Carriers.

Thanks for your input, Andy. I'll take it on board. :)

I often wonder why I cannot find a person on a Census on GR and then, when I request it of a rootschatterer, hey presto, they find it. This happened quite recently when I was looking for my grandfather on the 1901 census. I couldn't find him and someone kindly found him for me.

Do different sites have different databases?

Different transcriptions of the same information

I also have an ancestor who worked for the post office and he is a brick wall for me so that will be good any idea when that is going on :)

So glad I am not alone,

Then there are all the Family History societies I have been members to up to four at one time :(

They all offer different things in different areas so had to become a member even if it was only for one year ;D ;D

Ancestry & Findmypast both have all the same original census returns from 1841 - 1901 & FindMyPast only 1911

The reason they are sometimes different is that different people may have transcribed the records for each site, thus someone might see a name spelt one way and another in a totally different way.  IE in my family the Fleming's are Fleming/Flemming on FindMyPast & in some instances on Ancestry they are Hemming/Heming.

But on Ancestry you can add an amendment (which shows up with a leaf on it, I think) they do not change their records.  And on FindMyPast they will if they agree with your submitted amendment change the record.

I have just had my renewal notification through from FindMyPast and they want £74.95 for 6 months but I have 20% discount so its probably about £92

Agreed, but each has records that the other doesn't have.
