old letters
« on: Wednesday 07 April 10 19:24 BST (UK) »
I have several letters dating from 1831-1881. They were found in a filing cabinet which came from a school when it closed down. I have tried to read them and they seem to be about A clergy daughters school at Gloucester and Bristol also Spa church Christ church Gloucester. Their content is about staff resignations, statements about affairs to be wound up and new schools opening.

These are the names involved.
Dr Charles MAYO
Miss Charlotte ANLEY headmistress
Rev R HOLMES minister of Christ church Gloucester died 6th May 1867
Dr MAITLAND
Essex? BOWEN

There are more names but I cannot work them out. I would love to give these letters to someone either related to one of these people or else just interested in researching the schools. Anyone any ideas?

Hi Thelma

How about sending them to Gloucester Archives for safe-keeping

I have done some more investigation and I have now realised these letters are connected with the history of St Brandons school in Clevedon, North Somerset. I am therefore going to contact Bristol Records office as they have some paperwork about St Brandons already.

Hi Thelma

That's a good idea - I had a look for some of the names you mention and they seem to be located all round the country, so maybe they were parents or board members of the school?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I have now contacted the Bristol record office and they will take the letters. The people mentioned were certainly not parents but were hiring and firing and discussing finances. That sounds quite boring but the letters are very interesting!
Thanks for your interest.
