what age is she & date of photo?

any ideas as to the age of this lady and when photo was taken wd be appreciated. I dont think I have the original any more so can't show the back sorry.

Hi, Carol, I wondered also why she has such a beautiful ornate hat when the rest of her clothes are so plain. Do you think she is a widow perhaps as all in black?

Hi June...she doesn't have a wedding ring so I would say not...The clothes are dark but may not be black...Our dating experts will be able to help you more with their expert knowledge when they come on the board later.

Is she about 80?

The clever clogs who can tell you when the pic was taken by the clothes- hat, collar, etc will help  you more than I can- if you get them going on this you could well establish when the pic was taken which will, assuming you know her birth year- give you a good result.

Great I look forward to hearing the dating experts!!  All I know about this lady so far is she is probably a Johnston relative or spouse of one originating from Carlisle.  :)

I don't believe she's in mourning as the white around her hat & bodice indicates otherwise,although it would be permitted after the 1st. year.
What's she's wearing was common for older women over a long period.At present this has the look of the 1880's but really need to see all of the card & back.

Yes, there isn't really much that's dateable in this photo, as the dress is pretty well covered up by the shawl.

I'd guess maybe 1880s but the clothing could be a bit earlier, as older women didn't seem to care as much about staying in style. If the original shows up, please post a scan of the back...doesn't have to be big.
