Thank you
The marriage took place 8 years later in 1849 in Totnes, Devon. John's occupation was given as "Gentleman", residence "Holne" which is, I think in Devon. It's possible that they had moved to Devon at some point.
Any leads would be helpful.

Have searched the 1841 census for Devon and Dorset cant find any more possibilities yet unless shes been mistranscribed and have tried just Charlotte and gone through the H Surnames but no luck. The Holne 1841 and 1851 in transcribed on the Genuki site no John Harris there would have thought he might be there in 1851?
Does it give a full address for Charlotte on the marriage cert?
John being a Gentleman narrows the search down a bit for him at least if we could find him.

Hi Welsh Lady
Thank you very much for that. I also looked through the 1841 Holne Census on Genuki. The Marriage Certificate only gives "Holne" as John Harris' place of residence. I've also tried a number of searches for John and Charlotte in Devon but no luck yet. The writing of "Gentleman" is rather indistinct, so If you would like to mail me at mpomeroy @ intekom.co.za (remove spaces), I can send you a copy to see if you can decipher it.
Thank you
Martin

Ni allibaker
Thank you.
I have details of Samuel and Sarah Harris' family. Here are some of them:
Jane         bap 2 Dec 1804  would be 36 in 1841 (Census shows 25)
Charlotte bap 13 Jan 1811 d 23 May 1811
Sarah       bap 13 Jan 1811
Henry       bap 5 Apr 1812
Charlotte bap 20 Aug 1813  would be 27 in 1841 (Census shows 25)
So they had both a Jane and 2 Charlotte's but no Fanny.

John and Ann Harris could be a possibility. How far is Sydling St Nicholas from Stalbridge?
My Charlotte was definitey born in Stalbridge according to all Census Records.

the 1841 cencus is rounded down for adults to the nearest 5 so charlotte 25yrs could indeed be your girl
