Occupation - military and normal?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it was normal to have a military rank/occupation on a marriage/death certificate in addition to a normal occupation?  Could it be that he was a reserve and not a full time soldier?  He was in his early 40s at the time.

I have John Harry Phillips, whose wife died in May 1917 in Lancashire and on her death certificate, under occupation it says ' wife of corporal 7321 John Harry Phillips Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, then underneath it says ironworker.  Iron worker was his occupation on the 1911 census.
On his 2nd marriage one month later (yes 1 month!!) in Shrewsbury Shropshire it has his occupation as Corporal, K.S.L.I and then butcher.  Butcher was his occupation up until 1906 at least and the occupation he continued in later in life as various certificates have him listed as a master butcher.
I have tried to find records of John Harry Phillips on Ancestry but have drawn a blank, the only one I could find that may have matched was a medal card but it was for a private with a different regimental number.

Hi, I also have an instance of this on a marriage cert - and I suspect it was because the marriage occurred in wartime when men had enlisted and so normally had the civilian job but were in the military at the time of the marriage.

Ancestry have a service record for a John Henry PHILLIPS - KSLI - 1 yr service (special reserves) noted as aged 34 in 1914, children listed as Charlotte, Violet, Doris, Constance and Samuel, wife Martha (m 1896).
