Yeovil - location of
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 03:47 BST (UK) »
I'm attempting to reconcile the location of Yeovil, Devon as mentioned as the birthplace of Sam J. Benjafield c1831 as shown in the 1881 Census for Hampshire and that of Yeovil, Somerset.

While there are some Google references to the keywords Yeovil+Devon they are not helpful. Altho' one can find a few references to being born in Yeovil, Devon, but 99.9999% of references point to Yeovil, Somerset, including Google Maps and the like, as well as the Gazetteer.

Thank for any help.

Either the person filling in the census schedule or the enumerator copying the schedule into the enumeration book has made a mistake, there is no Yeovil in Devonshire.

Thank you Stan.  I was thinking that perhaps Yeovil was near the border of Devon and Somerset during some change in county borders.  But reading old and new maps this seems  not to be the case.   Now that I know that it is not Devon I have found Benjafield in the 1891 Census which shows him being born in Yeovil Somerset. This is good news as I am building a genealogy location map on Google My Maps.

A lesson I have learned from this is not to put the birth county based on one Census  into another Census search if there is any doubt on its validity.

Cheers

Your  relation  could have come from  the country area to the east of Yeovil.

Trent (now in Dorset) used to be in Somerset and Yeovil can be seen from the upstairs windows of my daughters home in Trent.

Apologies . I really must read Posts carefully .

Automatically "read" Dorset and not Devon .

Sorry if I confused you.

The area to the east of Yeovil is indeed border country with many parishes within walking distance of each other are in three different counties, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, Needless to say a major line of my research covers one family and inevitably three county record centres.

Thanks Springbok and Redroger for your input -

Interesting to note that a Google search of "born in Yeovil Dorset" produces a significant number of births in that location - more so than Yeovil Devon.  In fact on one researcher's website he has ancestors born in both places.
