Christs Hospital Records?
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 17:36 BST (UK) »
1891  Census

Thomas  ROCHESTER   Born  Chelmsford  1878

Pupil in   London  Christchurch Newgate  St.     District  Christs Hospital

Where can I find records for  this hospital?  don't seem to be on Ancestry, unless I'm missing them.
He was with his grandparents on 1881, would like to trace dates of  his entry/leaving Christs, if possible
Any help gratefully  appreciated

Hi 2mm

You may be looking for info that has failed to survive. What does has been deposited at the Guildhall Library

Christ's Hospital School moved out of London - google will find their website. Its very possible (probable) they have still got their records.

Christ's Hospital School near Horsham has an archivist so they should be able to help you.   www.christs-hospital.org.uk
Wikipedia has an interesting article about it too.

My thanks to you all, for your replies and help  re  Thomas Rochester. and Christs Hospital's interesting history. I hope, in time, that I may be able to find more information about Thomas's stay.

Hello 2mm,

Thomas' attendance at Christ's Hospital - a Blue Coat School, suggests that his father was a member of a London guild and possibly even a Freeman of the City of London.

I say this from direct experience in my own family. Membership of the Skinners Guild - the Worshipful Company of Skinners - has been passed down through my mother's paternal lineage for over 200 years. As part of it's charitable work, the Skinners paid for the education of several generations of my family at Christ's.

Hi Justin, I do not have a birth cert for Thomas,  Iam only working on assumptions.1881 he was with his
grandparents.  The occupations from both families were cab driver, barge builder, and his father, possibly only for a few years, was a police constable.  I may, in time contact the school and find out costs etc. to see if the do have any other information on him.
Thanks for your reply  2mm :)

I found my grandfather's admission records, etc., on a microfilm at a local LDS library.  They have filmed the "Children's Register" which is (or was) held at the Guild Hall, London.

In my grandfather's case, his admission was sponsored (in 1855) by the then Lord Mayor of London, William Hunter, who was allowed one "presentation" per year.

Hope this helps,

ReidyB
