How to start looking for burials
« on: Monday 12 April 10 08:29 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Please could someone advise me on how to start the search for burials...
I have looked on here many times and seen links to different churches etc in the areas i am looking...but not found any of my family yet..
Is it possible also to find burials from 1940 to 1960...or maybe cremations.
I live a few hundred miles away from my search area so its so hard.
I have visited one church in particular that I thought would be the center of my search but ...there were no headstones. The church was St Helens Kelloe Durham.
Any Advise please..
Thankyou
Chrissie

Burials can be difficult to find and ones for such recent dates are often not online.
Newspaper announcements will often give date and place of funeral service/burial but if the death is announced in the paper after the burial/cremation often those details aren't given.
If you know the church the family attended and there are no headstones- contact church and ask where people from the congregation are buried. Also, some clergy keep a note of funerals they officiate at and if they been at (one from our church even pasted in newspaper obituary in his notebook).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Dear aghadowey,
Thankyou so much for your reply, Its so hard not knowing where any of my family are. I will sit today and write to the Vicar of St Helens...I will try and find out his name first...and address !!!!! I have looked on google so many times looking for churches that may be near to the area..
Even if I could just find my Grand parents...it would be wonderful.
Thankyou for your help

Hi Chrissie, if you try here

http://nd.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/web/parishes?open&count=100

click on the parish your interested in then on the  name of the church it will tell you if the registers are held at Durham Record Office or if they are still held at the church. Hope that helps.

Hello again Chrissie  :)

back in November last year I suggested you contact Durham Record Office about a burial (Lily Barrow), did you do so?
