1871 & 1891 census for Shelley family in Chipping Norton
« on: Thursday 24 March 05 07:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to help another poster with this family and would really like to know what it says for them in 1871 & 1891 particularly ages and places of birth - father William Shelley born 1830s Langford Berks (though no trace found) mother in 1891 (second wife) Jane born Bampton and assorted children including Matilda (b 1865 Gloucester) Albert (b 1859 Langford) and Agnes (bron 1877 Chipping Norton OXF).  Many thanks for any help - cos I'm as confused as he is now

Debbie,

1871 census:

Chipping Norton RG10/1457 ED 3 F 103 P 2 SCH 1
Princedown Farm (Can't be sure about this)

William SHELLEY, H, Wid, 32 (the index show b 1834, but I am sure the image reads 32), Carter, Berks Langford
Albert SHELLEY, Son. U, 13, Labourer, Berks Langford
Shadrack (I think) SHELLEY, Son, U 10, Labourer, Gloster Mormhill (looks like)
Matilda SHELLEY, Dau, U, 6, Scholar, Gloster Bampton
William SHELLEY, Son, U, 3, Scholar, Gloster Cirencester

As you can see, the writing of the enumerator is a little difficult to read.   I can't find an 1891 entry for any of these individuals.
By 1901 William is in New Street, Chipping Norton
RG13/1399 ED 3 F 51 P 1 Sch 6

William, H, W, 62, M, Fruiterer,Berks Langford
Shadrack, S, U, 17, M, Wool Sorter at Factory, Oxon Chipping Norton
William Clapton, Son in Law, M, 22, M, Coachman, Oxon Chipping Norton
Alice Clapton, Dau, M, 22, F,  , Oxon Chipping Norton
Ivy Clapton, GD, U, 5m, F,  , Oxon Chipping Norton

The index shows the surname as Clopton, but I read it as Clapton.

Harry

I note there is a post about this on B-G forums that has found different information.

Debbie,

To answer your other question, there is another forum called British Genealogy with a similar structure to Rootschat (each county has its own board etc) at
http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/index.php

Debbie,

Sorry, I disagree with Kris, I just found William and Family in 1901 at (from the original image)
Chipping Norton

Spring Street

William SHELLEY, H, M, 52, M, Lisenced Hawker, Bucks Langford
Jane SHELLEY, W, M, 50, F,  , Oxon Chipping Norton

all other details the same.   The entry ABOVE William is b Bristol.

Regards
Harry

So Sorry To have given you false hope here Debbie....Harry is quite right...It is Langford Bucks I have made a big mistake in focussing in on the POBs I have somehow taken Bristol from the person above William and worked down from there...Sincere appologies.  :-[ Kris

A big thankyou to you both - at least we now know that William consistantly says he was born in Langford (Bucks?? - the one I have found is in Berks - or it was then - now Oxfordshire) - even his year of birth is fairly consistant I am still wondering if the spelling of this familys surname has changed possibly from SHIRLEY which is found in the area - as we are not even finding entries in the civil registration indexes which tie in with the older children - the search goes on

Harry - could that Mornhill Glous POB - be Harnhill do you think?

thanks for the info about the other board I was not aware of it
