Peter PENDER, Mayor of Falmouth.
« on: Monday 12 April 10 18:38 BST (UK) »
Can anyone give me information about Peter Pender, please?

Family stories have him as being the first Mayor of Falmouth and he apparently had his own currency ???

I have found him as Mayor in 1706 and 1713.   Is it possible that he, or another Peter Pender, was Mayor before that?

I am trying to link him to Daniel Pender bc1730 and one of his sons - Peter Pender, who was baptised in Falmouth 25.09.1768 and married to Elizabeth Hamlyn 19.08.1797.

I would be very interested in any information about the life and family of Peter Pender, the Mayor of Falmouth.

Have you checked the search facility on the Cornwall Record Office site?
http://crocat.cornwall.gov.uk/dserve/dserve.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Search.tcl

If you try the surname Pendar, there is a will of Benjamin Rogers, merchant of Penryn,  dated 1722, which says 'to Benjamin and Mary, the two children of my uncle Peter Pendar'.

Benjamin was buried in  St Gluvias 1769 aged 54
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/moreinfo.php?ID=698238&dbtype=burials&formval=
his baptism is in IGI extracted batch C053171 for St Gluvias - baptised 14/8/1716 son of Peter & Mary.
Other baptisms in same batch to same parents
Mary 29/8/1718
Mary bp 8/6/1725
Anne bp 22/8/1728
Anne bp 3/9/1730
Daniell bp 6/1/1726
there's a possible burial for the first Mary 9/11/1722 in Falmouth, and the first Anne 30/8/1728

There's a possible marriage for Peter in 1702
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/moreinfo.php?ID=427548&dbtype=marriages&formval=
Sybilla was buried 25/5/1712 in Falmouth
haven't spotted his marriage to Mary as yet.

There's a 5 page will at the National Archives for Peter Pender, merchant of Penryn, dated 1730 that could help. Ref PROB 11/641.

Many thanks osprey for your reply and for those great websites.

The Peter Pender will of 1732 sounds as tho' it could be the person I'm looking for.   Also the marriage in 1702.    Benjamin Rogers sounds interesting too.

I have some delving to do.

think Peter's father, Benjamin, was mayor before him. Reference to him being mayor in 1670
http://www.penrynopc.co.uk/Puritans.html

The record office search shows that they have a copy of the writ relating to Peter's lection as mayor of Penryn in 1725 - ref T/1532

Peter's baptism is in IGI batch P001721 for Falmouth, bp 6/7/1679 son of Benjamin & Anne.

In the same batch, & to same parents
Elizabeth bp 13/5/1669
Elizabeth bp 18/4/1678
Benjamin bp 29/12/1675
Joan bp 11/8/1673    (married John Netherton in 1698)
Anne bp 13/12/1667
Dorothy bp 31/1/1671

possible marriage

You can get copies of documents held in Truro
http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=14710

The will at the national Archives is downloadable for the sum of £3.50.

Hi Osprey

This is great :)

I now have a copy of Peter Pender's will 1730.   Sibella Hearle was his first wife, now deceased, and he then married Mary (Speed?).   He son Benjamin was named as executor and there are three further children mentioned - Peter, Mary and Daniel.

I haven't had time to study the will properly, it takes a bit of deciphering, but it mentions his father-in-law Daniel Speed/Spood and also his sisters.   So, well worth getting :)

Thankyou so much for all your help :)

Hi SamnJoan
A few years ago I found your post about Richard Harding Butler which was very interesting but only started building up the family tree in earnest last year during lockdown. I have been using ancestry which has been great. Unfortunately as this thread is about 11 years old, the links no longer work. Did you get the answers you were seeking?
