Identification of Corps/Regt please
« on: Tuesday 13 April 10 23:51 BST (UK) »
I cannot see the letters on his epaulette. At first I thought it was RPC but I don't think that the Pioneer Corps existed then did they? Weren't they called the "Labour Corps"? Also I am keen to know what badge is above his sergeant's chevrons.

If it helps. the photo was taken in 1918 in Egypt.

Prior to enlistment he lived in the LONDON area.

Grateful for any information.

hi

I do beleve it is the RFC royal flying corps later to become the RAF

his rank was a flight sargent

from my rechurch there was 7 squdrens and at 5 training camps
but apart from that i can not tell you any more i waould suspect he was a instructer or sener ground crew

Can you show more of the badge above the chevrons?

I have a hunch that it might be a wireless operator's .  If you post the full name it might set the hounds running.

http://www.britairforce.com/rfc_1.htm there was no radio opperater insignea for that time that i can see

this is the link for the imperial war museum http://www.iwm.org.uk/server/show/ConWebDoc.2556
that gives you the adress where you can get the personall records from

i have copyed the image so you can compair it with the orignal

The middle letter of the shoulder title is not an 'F' - if anything it is more like a 'D' the exterior curvature being greater than the first letter 'R'. Could it be R.D.G. ? Royal Dragoon Guards - Armoured Corps?
I too thought of Wireless/Radio trade badge as opposed to Flight Sgt which used to be a crown above the chevrons.
However I stick by 'D' as opposed to an 'F'.
George.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I also still consider that the orifice in the centre of the second letter is ovoid rather than rectangular. I too wondered about the 'apparently leather buttons'.
By the way I also am ex - airborne forces with tours in Infantry units also between 1943 and 1972 but would not consider that makes me an expert in uniforms and insignia.
Cheers,
G.

I think I've started something here!!  Thank you all for participating and helping me...  I am posting another photo taken the year previously although it probably doesn't help.

The man in the photo is HARRY JAMES ABBEY. Also as yet I have not found his MEDAL INDEX CARD.

As a matter of interest, he emigrated to Australia in the early 1920s and during WW2 he was discharged from the Volunteer Defence Corps of the Australian Army at age 56.

Any further thoughts, theories and information very much welcomed!! ::) ::)
