Help needed in deciphering handwriting on Birth Cert
« on: Wednesday 14 April 10 09:45 BST (UK) »
I have received an 1840 Birth Cert from UK GRO. However I cannot read the maiden surname of the mother.
I have attached a high res scan which is as good as the original. However the file size limit means I can show only the Mother's information. Other, known information:
Date etc - Tenth of March 1840 in the Parish of Crowhurst
Name - Jane
Sex - Girl
Father - James Beney
Mother - Ruth Beney formerly xxxxxxxxx?
Occupation - Labourer
Informant - James Beney's mark, Father, Crowhurst
Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi John  :)

I was thinking that. I've had another look and think that it maybe Lawrence - -with the e having a long flourish.  Have you checked for a marriage between James Beney and a Ruth?

I am not sure, Laramie, Lawrence ???

Family Tree has her as Ruth Swetman and indeed there is a Ruth Swetman christening on the IGI 1797.
But I cant see Swetman in the image you have posted

1841 Census
HO107/1105/1/Crowhurst

James BEENY, 45, Ag lab, Not born in County
Ruth, 45
Eliza, 15
James, 11
Ruth, 9
Sarah, 7
Charlotte, 5
JANE, 1
All others born in County

The IGI has these extracted  christenings;
CHARLES, 13 February 1820
ELIZABETH, 06 July 1822
ELIZA, 02 January 1825
RUTH, 15 July 1827 ( may have died as another child named Ruth later)
HESTER, 15 July 1827
JAMES, 11 April 1830
HANNAH, 01 March 1832
RUTH, 01 March 1832
CHARLOTTE, 05 February 1837
JANE, 12 April 1840

Hopefully someone who has access can find a Marriage c 1819 to ascertain Ruths maiden name ;)

Trish
Lawrence seems feasible.
The Census information and Christenings you have found are my ancestral family. Sarah Beney is my great great grandmother. I purchased Jane Beney's certificate because all other siblings were born prior to 1837 and are not on GRO.

Yes, I though you had done it for that reason John.

Hopefully someone will come up with a marriage for you ;D

Hi Gadget
Interesting you came up with Lawrence as well.
I've tried for a marriage via Sussex Online Parish info.
I will try in IGI
Thanks
John

A James Beaney married a Ruth Swetman 13 October 1817 in Salehurst.  She was 21, he was 22.  Witnesses: Richard Durrant & John Heathfield.

I don't see Swetman in that extract either. :-\
