1861 census
« on: Wednesday 14 April 10 16:15 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find a Thomas Bateman, born 1838, St Sepulchre, Northampton in the 1861 census please.  He married in 1862 Ann Helen (Ellen) Glover born 1841 Finedon, Northants.

I've searched and searched and can't find him, although he does appear in the 1851 census with his Grandparents Henry and Sarah Ashby and then in the 1871 census with his wife Ellen and son Thos.

If you do find it, I would appreciate knowing from where I can get a copy.

Thanks

He's certainly one that's fun to search, isn't he!   I agree with you that there's no instant answer for 1861.
What was Thomas's occupation?
I ask because the only possible I've found so far, and it's most unlikely to be yours (almost certainly not), is a Thomas Baitman of the right age who is a boarder in Lancashire.   The birthplace is entirely wrong but sometimes when the details were given for boarders they were not given by the person themselves but by someone else who made an educated / uneducated guess.

Still trying but no luck so far.    There is a Thomas Ashby listed as 'son' living his Sarah Ashby, head of household but Sarah is 64 so possible but more likely a grandson, and it wouldn't be the first time an enumerator had given the household one surname when they should be different.
Anything else you can tell us about the family that might make them identifiable?

Excellent point, comes under the heading of 'why didn't I ask that' - I haven't yet managed to pick up Ann Helen / Ellen Glover on the 1861 census either.  Had hoped to get some clues on the geography.

Both Thomas and Ellen's' address was No 10 Nelson Square, Northampton on the marriage certificate.  I've tried to find them living at this address but the names aren't the same.  Thomas' father (also Thomas) was deceased  and Ellen Glover's father was stated as John.  It looks like both fathers were shoemakers.

In 1851 he was living with Henry and Sarah Ashby at 2 Nelson Street Square, St Sepulchre, Northampton and also with (I assume) sisters Dorothy and Sophia.  He was a Sawyer's labourer.

1871 census he was living in Oldbury with wife and son.  I can't make out his occupation.

Hope this helps.

1871 says Painter.
As there's no sign of either of them my guess is they were living together away from the family & didn't do the census for that reason.

Thanks for interpreting the occupation.  Its a bit different to being a Sawyer's labourer!

I thought you had to complete the census but I think you are probably correct.

I know this post was sometime ago and don't know whether you have found any further info. or are still looking....

I couldn't locate an exact match for Thomas BATEMAN born 1838 on the 1861 census either

This was the only Thomas BATEMAN I could find of the right age but totally wrong place of birth

1861
Vessel ‘Blenheim’
BATEMAN, Thos Single M 23 1838 Royal N C Voltr born Cork

I haven't yet managed to pick up Ann Helen / Ellen Glover on the 1861 census either.

This looks as if it could be Ann Helen/Ellen GLOVER on 1861c & possibly 1851c with her parents

1861c High Street, Wymington, Hamlet (Thomas LATHAM Head)
GLOVER Helen  Unmarried F 20 1841 Domestic Servant Finedon

1851c Harlock's Yard, Back Street, Finedon
GLOVER
John Head Married  M 30 1821 Labourer Finedon
Hannah Wife Married  F 32 1819  Finedon
Ann E Daughter Unmarried  F 9 1842 Scholar Finedon
Elizabeth Daughter Unmarried  F 7 1844 Scholar Finedon
Mary Daughter Unmarried  F 5 1846 Scholar  Finedon
Rebecca Daughter Unmarried  F 1 1850 At Home Finedon

here's Thomas on 1841 which you probably already have, which links with the 1851 census you mention ie living with his grandparents Henry & Sarah ASHBY

1841
Nelson Street Middle Square, St Sepulchre, Northampton
HO107 Piece:814 Book/Folio:13/29 Page:13
ASHBY Henry M 45 1796
   “           Sarah F 50 1791 Northampton
   “           Dorothy F 5 1836 Northamptonshire
BATEMAN, Thomas M 3 1838 Northamptonshire
   “                  Sophia F 1 1840 Northamptonshire

familysearch beta has this christening possible Dorothy above? Although she's dittoed as an ASHBY on 1841 census

Dorothy BATEMAN 12/9/1836 Ringstead Northampton
Father Thomas Bateman mother Sophia

and here's Thomas' grandmother Sarah on 1861 - shame he's not with her here  ???

Both Thomas and Ellen's' address was No 10 Nelson Square, Northampton on the marriage certificate.

Thomas' father (also Thomas) was deceased  and Ellen Glover's father was stated as John

Looks as if Thomas & Ellen may have been living with Sarah ASHBY after 1861 looking at the address given for their residence of marriage in 1862 :-\

1861 10, Square 2, Nelson Street, St Sepulchre, Northampton
ASHBY Sarah Head Widow F 70 1791 Formerly Washerwoman Towcester
plus a visitor & boarder
