Joseph James bc 1840 Downend

Joseph James was my gg grandfather. Unfortunately with that common name I have found him difficult to track down in his early years. I have just sent for his marriage cert so that will help but can anyone find an obvious candidate in 1841 or 1861? Thanks Thelma

I think I have found him- from 1861 census he was married to mary A??

he gives a different y.o.b. on almost every census

Thanks for that info. It has really confused me! I thought he married Mary Ann Clements in 1865! It did seem a bit late and their first son Harry was born in 1862. His second wife was also a Mary (Haskins) i think born c1851 Abergavenny. Ah. What a muddle.

All I am sure about is that Mary Ann Clements was my gg grandmother ( taken from birth cert of her daughter Flora born 1866). I had better try to track down the death of the first Mary and see what the GRO say about the marriage cert.
