COMPLETED - Date and lighten mystery man, please

[Rufous Treecreeper]

Found this photo in a box of old letters.  Hoping someone can give me a date for it and also, if possible, make it less dark.

The photographer was J. (James) C. Foyle and according to the State Library of Victoria he worked 1880 - 1919 in Warrnambool and Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The letters it was with were primarily written by BEST and PENROSE family members, if anyone recognizes him

Have posted grayscale and colour versions, as not sure which is better (should say which is worse ). 

I hope one of the talented people here can help, and it may help me identify my mystery man.
