Missing from 1851 census
« on: Thursday 15 April 10 11:40 BST (UK) »
I'm looking into Daniel Cowin c1807.  Married (1) Margeret Scarffe.  They are listed on the 1841 census but disappear from the 1851 census.

Daniel and Margaret had the following children:

Margaret (1840)
William D (1846)
Emily E (1852)
Robert Francis (1854)

all born Douglas .

In Feb 1858 Daniel married (Sarah) Jane Corleen who is subsequently listed in 1881 with William D (as step son)  There were 8 or 9 children of the second marriage.

The mystery is:

Where were Daniel and family in 1851?  If anyone has run across this family and can fill in the info that would be great

thanks

Mike

Tati

thanks for such a quick response.  Looks very much like a match.  All I have to work out now is why my own searches didn't bring this up :-)  It was driving me mad!

thanks again

Mike

Mike, my g grandmother was Mary Ann,  the daughter of Daniel and Margaret.  She married William Quine in Douglas in 1859  Have you traced the lineage of her parents any further back or do you have any photos of the family?  If so I would like to get in touch w/you.  Bill Q

Daniel was most probably son of Thomas Cowin farmer Langaghyn in 1841, retired farmer Langaghyn cottage 1851 age 74 (with bro James age 64) wife Jane Christian son Daniel bapt 1808
I suspect Thomas was gson of Thomas Cowin = Ann Banks (?marr but Thos will 1781 mentions lanjahan, Ann will 1797)
(will summaries on www.manxnotebook.com - however not determined missing generation (should be easy as land concerned
(the 1841 + 1851 households give links to various families)
in 1841 + 51 there is a Wm Scarffe in household - described as visitor in 51 ? father of Margt bapt Onchan 18110427 - he looks like s/o Philip Scarffe + ann Callister bapt Lonan 17690504
any thing with a Manx Connection
