« on: Tuesday 18 May 04 01:08 BST (UK) »
researching John Dwyer born c1774 who arrived in Australia on Atlas11 in 1802, an Irish Rebel.  He said that he came from the town of Doon.
He called the house he built here in Australia Doon Cottage.

Maybe someone can help

Hiya Jeanette,

John was born in 1774..I had to read your message a second time as I wondered about the mention of "an Irish Rebel" but John obviously fought in the Rising of '98. I have found some information about Doon. http://www.lcc.ie/NR/rdonlyres/4C8BC22C-AAA2-4E97-8B25-32F6149E41A9/0/DOON.pdf
There were a lot of Dwyers in Doon at the time of Griffiths Valuation in Co. Limerick which took place in 1853.  http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php Most of them lived in the parish (Pop 5311) rather than the village (Pop 178). I imagine descendents of some of John's relations may still live in the area.

I wonder if John crossed to Wexford on the east coast of Ireland and took an active part in the main battles there. More likely he fought in minor skirmishes in the Limerick area where Martial Law was imposed.

Many thanks for the detail on Doon and also for the website of the Griffiths Land Valuation.  We were in Doon last year and even though there are Dwyers still living there they are not interested and do not know their family roots.  So it is hard to prove anything.  The Churches we visited in Ireland do not even keep burial records.

Again many thanks and will search your websites in detail.
