WW1 Records. - COMPLETED.
« on: Thursday 15 April 10 19:10 BST (UK) »
Would someone point me in the right direction about obtaining the Service Record of a soldier killed in the first world war.  I am guessing obviously the War Department, but how do I get the ball rolling??  Thank you.  I have the service number and Regiment of the person involved.

What service records survive are available at the National Archives and for rank and file Army personnel, also available through Ancestry.

If you post the details that you have, some-one will be able to tell you what is available.

Alexander's details are here:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=814861
and
http://www.snwm.org/cgi-bin/db_w1.pl?function=view&id=58147

his will reference is
SC70/8/470/35
which you can view on Scottish National Archives
http://195.153.34.9/onlinecatalogue/search.aspx

There are Medal Index cards for him on the National Archives at Kew for £2.00 and on Ancestry.

His service records do not appear to be on Ancestry.

8/10th Gordons and the rest of 15th Division relieved 23rd Division on the La Sars sector on 8th October in very heavy rain. The flooding was so bad that they took 9 hours to complete the relief. There was no formal action in October but artillery and gas shells were the main cause of casualties.
