Charles Fredrick Finch of Helmdon, 7th Batt Norths Regt.
« on: Sunday 18 April 10 18:26 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find more info on the above. He was a private in the 7th Battalion Northamptonshire Regt Number 18313, born Helmdon killed in Flanders on 9th October 1916. Commonwealth War Graves tells me he had a wife, F N H Finch of Preston Capes, Byfield. I presume this means that is where she lived when he was killed. I have searched BMD for either the birth of Charles Frederick or his marriage without much success & 1901 & 1911 census do not show a Charles F Finch. I do know he enlisted in Northampton. Any ideas to assist my search would be appreciated.

Hi

Can I ask where you got the info from that he was b Helmdon and also that his christian names were Charles Frederick.  CWGC website only shows initials and no birthplace

Details obtained from Military section of Find My Past.com, Record of Soldiers who died in Great War.
One vital detail is not shown that is his date of birth. I have found that details of soldiers of the Northamptonshires are of the "burnt record" type and the web sites on line seem to be defunct which is a problem. Perhaps a visit to Kew is called for.

HI Alan.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

Carole seems to have helped with a lot of detail, yet if you still want
more info on his Army life also maybe if you change your topic heading
to include Norths Regiment, Scrimnet or Forester, Steve and the gang
will see it.

Or you can ask a mod to link to the Armed Forces board for you.

Thanks Carol & SeaHall looks like you have covered most details. Will take your suggestion re "Norths Regt". Seems so tragic signing up and getting killed in his late 30's

A new publication, "Helmdon's War Memorial - The Men Behind the Names", has been published at www.helmdon.com, which includes an entry for Charles Fredrick Finch.
