What is Jno. short for?
« on: Monday 19 April 10 07:52 BST (UK) »
I came across the male forename "Jno." in a death record for Bo'ness.  Can anyone tell me what the full forename is?

Thanks!

I found a website which says Jno. = Johannes = John.  Anyone any other suggestions?

Agree with KHP,

Earliest of my NSW forebears signed his name both ways Jno and John.  Jno was used when signing official work documents (he was a surveyor) and John was used when signing on marriage and on various letters he wrote to the Colonial Secretary and both examples are found in the NSW State Archives.

Cheers,  JM
