Cape of Good Hope Inn, Tilston Malpas
« on: Monday 19 April 10 21:37 BST (UK) »
The Cape of Good Hope Inn, Tilston, Malpas is not in existence any more.  Does anyone know anything about this pub in the 1930s?  Or anywhere I might find information.
Can someone help, please,
Abiam2

Where is the reference from for the Cape of Good Hope Inn? There were three pubs in Tilston in the 1914 Directory, the Butchers Arms, the Carden Arms, and the Fox and Hounds.

The info below was sent to me by Cheshire Heritage.

I have looked through the Kelly's Directory of Cheshire for 1939 and found a Herbert Price as licensee of The Cape of Good Hope Inn in Tilston, Malpas. I am not sure whether this is your relative or not, as he died in 1938, but it depends when the information was gathered together for the next directory, and you may need to do more research.

So I was trying to find out if this is 'my' Herbert Price.  Do you know how long before publication they take the details of Licensees,  businesses etc.

Herbert would only have been licensee for about 3 years as he died in Oct 1938

Hi, Abiam2, not that this is going to help too much, but the Cape of Good Hope was still named thus and in Tilston in 1901 with a landlord named Thomas Evans who had been there since at least 1881. It was situated on Church Road near to the Rectory.
If it was not named in the 1914 Directory (as per Stanmapstone findings) but you found it in the 1939. It might have been out of use for a few years.
Have you tried the electoral registers for the 1930's? The other suggestion I have is that Malpas (the next village) has a website you could try to contact someone on there - just google Malpas.
Regards
Good Hunting

Hello again kathb,

Thanks for your interest.  I will have a look at the Malpas website.  How do I go about looking at the electoral rolls?

Cheers,
Abiam2

The Cape of Good Hope Inn building is still there see  http://www.rootschat.com/links/08i9/   it is the white building. I don't know why it is not in the directories, but it could be that it is actually in Tilston Green. You can see it on the 1910 map at http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/TwinMaps.aspx

Looks to be a bit quiet - so maybe not many customers which could be why it ppears to be licensed some years and not others.

In the 1881 Census the Cape of Good Hope is shown as a Beer House which is why it is not listed by name in the directories, I have found that generally Beer Houses are not listed by name.
In the 1902 Directory Thos. Evans is listed as a Beer Retailer and Cattle Dealer in Tilston. In the 1901 Census Thomas Evans is 'Innkeeper Pub' at the Cape of Good Hope, Church Road. In the 1914 Directory John Hopley is listed as a Beer Retailer in Tilston
I think you can accept that it was always licensed until it closed for good.

Thanks Stan, I think Herbert Price was the licensee or seller of ale between 1935 and his death in Oct 1938.  It is not vitally important but would have been nice to prove.  I have put a message on the Malpas web site without much hope - it has a very small membership and is mostly about present day issues.
