Holywell Hill, St Albans
« on: Tuesday 20 April 10 10:48 BST (UK) »
Hi all

In 1925 my Gt Grandfather Harry Wright and his wife Rosina and children Rosina and Harry lived at 30 Holywell Hill, St Albans.

Google Streets now shows it as a restaurant called Villadina with 2 storeys above. Does anyone know if it has always been a shop with flats above and what shop it used to be in 1925? Or was it just a residential address?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

I had a look at Kelly's Directory of Hertfordshire 1929, but it's arranged by surname or business name rather than by street, and I couldn't see an entry for 30 Holywell Hill from scanning through, although I could easily have missed it.  The neighbouring properties all look to have been shops though:

Crouch Fryatt & Crabb, tea rms. 26 Holywell hill
Johnson Henry Ernest, stationer 28 Holywell hill
Woodley Lilian (Mrs.), costumier, 32 Holywell hill
Paul G.A. (Garner & Smart), ladies' & children's outfitters & baby linen specialists, 34 Holywell hill
Kelly, Birkenhead & Co. Kildare
Marshall, Luton & area
Reid, Co. Kildare & Dublin
Cox, Barnack Northamptonshire
Edwards, Pagham, Sussex & area
Scott, Roxburghshire & Perthshire
Mitchell, Warwickshire
Savage, Hampshire

Thank you for your time RichardK.  I shall assume that number 30 was also a shop of some description. Although it would have been nice to know what they lived above!

Aha!  It was a pub in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
