I found a place that charges £15 for the CD and £50 per 1000 images. But there is a minimum charge of £50. I think you will find the same with all professional converters. The problem is that they use scanners that costs £15-20,000, and they have to recoup that cost.

I have been looking at microfilm to PC scanners for 15 years and the costs haven't come down a lot. Although the cameras have got a lot better you still need a heavy machine for unattended operation which all the pros want. The software that can do the job automatically costs £3-5,000 on top.

I found this a few years ago - http://www.microfichereader.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=83

But I thought that it looked a bit flimsy for £50 + VAT and postage. It is probably best used with a second person who can touch-type while you read them out :-\ At least it comes with batteries

A possible alternative, but much more expensive of course, is a USB microscope. ...

I wish I'd heard of that idea a few months ago. They had them in Aldi last August I believe. They were about £50.

I think they have something similar in Amazon for around £42 at the moment, but I'm not sure if anyone's tried that particular model for fiche. My attempts using a scanner with an adapter for 35mm were a waste of effort and as Ken says, the dedicated ones require a really big budget  :'(

Right then this is how I do it!
(Forget trying to use a scanner, I just about went blind blowing up a tiny image)
I have a small desktop tripod to which I attach my 10mega pixel camera.
I then turn on fiche reader to . then take a photo.
Simple as that.
I then save images to CD/DVD depending on how many photos I have taken.
(Saved image can be tiff (large file) or jpg (small file).
Using computer prog you can magnify prior to saving.
I will upload a sample image for you to see later, discs are in secure location as I write.

That's very good Brian. When I try it the light in the middle tends to make the rest unreadable. How close is the camera to the screen?
