MOWAT Orphir, Orkney
« on: Friday 25 March 05 01:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm doing our family tree and researching my MOWAT roots and any data that supports or verifies names, dates, and relationships I have for Orkney areas:

EDWARD MOWAT ... born 1786 ... ORPHIR, Orkney.

-that date (1786) because I was informed that he was on a passenger list of 1806, listed as age 19, as a labourer,  sailing on the KING GEORGE from STROMNESS to CHURCHILL.

I would like to verify that birth year and who his parents, and so on, were.

Thank you. I'll add more names as I sort them from disorganized jottings on disorganized papers from 3 big moves in as many years ;D

:)
My Email address is no longer working sorry
JOHN JAMES SMITH ... born 1791 (?)
-arrived FROM WESTMINSTER, LONDON to Canada at age 17 (1808) signed 5 year contract with HUDSONs BAY COMPANY lived RED RIVER SETTLEMENT area. (where was he born? Who were his parents? This is my GGG Grandfather)

EDWARD MOWAT .......... Orphir

ALEXANDER MOWAT -Caithness?
married: CATHERINE DAVIDSON MALCOLM from Wick, Caithness

FIRTH

MACKENZIE - CLOW St. Andrews, Fife 1922 and before.

You can try here and see what you can find but of all the Mowat's in Orkney I never saw one Edward born 1786 however there are others born on different dates.

The link in the above post is very interesting in that it totally updates what has happened to the children of the two Edward Mowat's who lived in the Red River area between 1833/1834 and onward.

I have done a lot of research on these Edward Mowat's. I am more interested in the one that was born in 1778(ish).

The Edward who was born in about 1786/7, did not have a son named Andrew. The Edward who was born in 1778/ish did have a son named Andrew.

There are many websites, and family trees that have mixed these two men's records into one man, and lately I have been on a mission to correct the misinformation.

For example. The book written by Donald Whyte, "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation" Volume II page 300 has mixed up the men. I have sent them records to show what they have done, hopefully if they put out an update they will correct the one record, and make one for each Edward Mowat.

Also the information on this page is incorrect.
http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/winnipegstreets/index.shtml
- It also combines the records of the two into one man. I have contacted them, but to date they have not replied.

The correct info is:

- that the Edward Mowat (aka Moad) born 1778(ish) is the Edward who died in 1862. He is the man who married Mary (who was an Indian) and had a son named Andrew.
Here is a link to his HBC service record:
http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/biographical/m/mowat_edward1778.pdf
(which includes family information)

- that the Edward Mowat born 1786(ish) died in about 1857, this man married Margaret, (a native) and did not have a son named Andrew.
Here is a link to his HBC service record:
http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/biographical/m/mowat_edward1786.pdf

I have noticed that a lot of family trees have combined the two into one man, stating that he married Mary and then Margaret (this is not the case) I have tried to contact them to correct their family trees, not too many have responded to date.

To add to my note, I will post what the two service records say for the two men, in case those links don't work in the future.

See my next post, I was told this record was too long for the system.

I hope I have helped, straighten out these Mowat's.

One other note. I am not related (so far) to either of these Edward Mowat's. The reason I was interested in them is because I was researching the James Mowat, who rode from Fort Sask to Calgary to get more NWMP in 1885. The man that James Mowat Elementary School is named after.
My research is so far pointing to the fact that James Mowat, (who did this) was possibly the son of Andrew Mowat, who was the son of Edward Mowat, b. 1778(ish) The man who married Mary.
I have located this family living just north of Edmonton in 1891 census.

One last note. I can only find an Edmonston Mowat born in 1778 ie
01/01/1779 MOUAT EDMONSTON, THOS. MOUAT/ M Unst /SHETLAND 011/ 0010 0007

I have not been able to find a birth for anything close to Edward Mowat, born abt 1786, but I will keep trying and it must be out there somewhere, probably severely misspelled.

I do have other Mowat records, indexed on my page at
http://www.tammymitchell.com/surnames/Mowat-BMD.html
and
http://www.tammymitchell.com/surnames/Mowat-BMD-2.html

Maybe they can assist someone.

Tammy
