Scanning old matt photos
« on: Thursday 22 April 10 10:06 BST (UK) »
I have a Canon MP250 which is good enough (I think!) for my needs.  However, I am trying to scan a couple of old photographs that are a matt finish, one is the old 1950's school photo type, the other is from 1945 and photo paper is a bit bumpy if you know what I mean!

The 50's one is okay but I would like it to be better, it comes out slightly 'snowy'.  The other one comes out with  double wiggly lines down it which aren't there on the actual photo.  I've tried changing the dpi but after that I'm clueless.

Would be grateful for any advice.

Hi Parmesan  :)

It seems to me that there might be something wrong with your scanner settings  :-\  How does it scan other types of photos?

Can you put your attempts up for us to see what is wrong with them, please?

Thanks, okay - give me a minute!

edit: well what do you know, I've just rescanned them and they're really not bad at all  :-[

Thanks anyway and I'll be back if I have any more problems  :)

My first thought is that there's something wrong with the scanner bed/light  :-\

Try doing a few scans on a random selection of photos to see what happens.

the one I did before that was worse.  It's a new machine so there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

I'll try again!

Thanks

Give the glass a thorough wipe with an anti-static cloth before you do any.

I've just enlarged the image to see it more clearly and the marks are all over it. Here's a 400% screen shot. Notice the coloured (rainbow) pixels on the right.
