Trying to trace "R. Jones, British School, Llanerchymedd" in 1871. Need details of family, birthplace etc.

Any help gratefully received.

Hi,

I can't find the British School on either the 1861 or 1871 census for Llanerchymedd . . . only Church Street and Market Garden.

Do you have any more details?

Regards,
Sharyn

Hi Shazzam,

Thanks for the reply - I am transcribing an 1871 diary, and in it for March 29 there is "...wrote to R. Jones, British School, Llanerchymedd."

The 1871 census was taken on April 2, so the entry was right on census date.

Perhaps R(obert?) Jones, obviously a schoolmaster, didn't actually live at the school, but elsewhere in Llanerchymedd?

A mystery!!!!

I checked again . . . the 1871 census for Llanerchymedd is only 3 pages, and found no school teacher at all.  The only R Jones were these:

Robert J Jones, 4 yrs
Richard Jones, 12, domestic servant, b: Llanerchymedd
Richard Jones, 20, blacksmith, b: Llanidan

I also looked through the area of Llandifrydogg, but the teacher's name was not Jones.

Maybe your fellow was off visiting somewhere at the time of the census (?).

Hi Quarryman,

Not being one to give up easily, I had a hunt for any Richard Jones in Anglesey listed as a visitor/lodger on the 1871 census . . . BINGO!

The 1861 census for Llandegai:

at Caergybi, Llandegai

John Jones, head, M, 37, slate quarries, b: caernarvonshire
Mary Jones, wife, 32, b: caernarvonshire
Richard, son, 11, scholar, b: caernarvonshire
John, son, 8, b: caernarvonshire
Ellin, dau, 5, b: caernarvonshire
Margaret, dau, 1, b: caernarvonshire

There was one other Richard Jones aged 12, but he was already working in a quarry.  I could find no Richard born about 1844 so the possible age of 27 on the 1871 census must be incorrect.

Hi Shazzam,

Many, many thanks for your unstinting efforts on my behalf.

There aren't enough words to say how much it is appreciated.
