Photograph:Which regiment and what rank?
« on: Thursday 22 April 10 15:59 BST (UK) »
I have had this photograph for a long while now and want to try and find out what I can. Family legend has it that this gentleman was a friend of my late grandfather's. My grandfather, George Jackson Stewart was born in Ardrishaig, Argyll, Scotland in 1898. He served firstly with the Lovat Scouts and then the Cameron Highlanders (6th Battalion). In the Spring of 1918 he served in France. Could the gentleman in the photograph be from one of the above mentioned regiments? Unfortunately, the reverse of the photograph reveals no additional information.

Also, if (by some miracle) somebody actually knows who this gentleman is I would be very interested to know.

Regards

Doddie

Probably Cameron Highlanders, tartan looks like Cameron of Erracht. He has one wound stripe on his right arm and two overseas service stripes on his left. The round badge on his right arm may be a lewis gunners badge.

Thank you for the very prompt replies. I have indeed been on to Ancestry and retrieved my grandfather's records. Buzancy18, your information is very helpful. It means I can start to build up a picture of the mystery man. Spoke to my mother recently. She says she remembers, as a little girl (1930's),  the photo being kept in a box with other keepsakes by her mother. Apparently, family legend is that the man in the photo later lived in the Dunoon area of Argyll and went on to become a very wealthy businessman. My grandfather visited him in Dunoon. If I'm patient I may eventually be able to put a name to the mystery man.

Very grateful for the cropping of the picture. My original attachment of the photograph was a bit clumsy, to say the least.
