I just realised I had a senior moment and gave you a Eleanor Richardson, not Robertson. :-[i

Thanks for that info Trish - very useful :)

Jo - My ex-mother-in-law's grandfather was a Robert Robertson and was born in 1873. The account he passed on to his daughter (my daughter's g-grandmother) was that he was sent away when he was 'young' and an uncle paid for him to be schooled and eventually become an electrician.

I sent off for his marriage certificate and he gives his father's name and profession as Ralph Robertson - Bricklayer. I guess the next bit is more speculative as I found the baptism of a Robert Robertson in 1873 with parents listed as Ralph Robertson & Jane. I know there were two Ralph and Jane couples in Newcastle at the time but the fact that he has put his father as a Bricklayer rather than a Builder makes me think that it's John Robertson's line. I think that would make him a nephew of George (1825). Haven't managed to find a death for a Robert nor does he appear with either family on any of the census returns. He seems to be born and then disappear. From family anecdotes, he lived in Scotland as a child but was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne - but we all know how this info can get distorted over time. I'm about to send off for some birth certificates as, on the 1939 Register, he gives his date of birth as 6th June 1873.

Any info in the meantime would be so appreciated :)
