Beyond hope?
« on: Sunday 25 April 10 21:32 BST (UK) »
I think only god himself will know what is inscribed on here. I tried about 10 different photos and more photos at different angles! Tried soaking it with water, and then different angles and this is the best one.

Can anyone make anything out here?

Swansea - Thomas, Williams, Howell, David, Rees, Griffiths, Jenkins, Bevan
Rutland - Hales
Derbyshire - Harlow, Riley, Pemberton, Aldred
Yorkshire - Stamper, Boyes, Duke
London - Harper, Wallis
Essex - Shelford, Wallis, Read, Stanes
Hertfordshire - Bishop
Cornwall - Johns, Soper, Rowe, Ball, Webb, Dunn, Quintrell, Hain, Oliver
Gloucestershire - Harper, Ash, Gregory, Denman
County Durham - Proud, Duke
Yorkshire - Stamper, Pickering

Whatever is in Blue is not coming out under the light.  You could return when it is dull and overcast so the shadows aren't cast

ROb
WYATT, COX, STRATTON, all from south Derbyshire and the STS, LEI border Burns Fellows Gough Wilks from STS in particular Black Country and now heading into SOP

I would think you'd be better going back on a sunny day.

Try and work out when the sun will be shining towards the left hand side of the stone, then do the same for when it'll be shining towards the right hand side. Most likely this will be early'ish morning and late'ish afternoon.

You might have to visit a couple of times just to catch the shadows in the right places, but this method far surpasses anything else I've ever tried. Inscriptions which seemed completely illegible suddenly appear as clear as day!

Hi

Have you tried soaking it and giving it a good clean up. That might help in determining the inscription. Do you know for sure that it is a family grave or could it be a likely one?

Ben

I have had a look at this on my laptop with the aid of my magnifying glass, bit old fashioned I know but it's worked before!

I can make out a plant of some sort on the left in a tall urn, on the right there is someone bending over with a shovel - facing to the right.

In the centre I think I can read the capital letters D A R E which could be part of a name.

I expect someone will come on the say I'm dreaming, but I'm trying to help.

Does the middle say DARLING WIFE?

Not the helpful part of the inscription though  :-\

Had another look with my trusty magnifying glass and I can make out JA(N?) about halfway down the middle section.

Which cemetery is this in, anywhere near here? (Bristol UK).

Before I read other poster's opinions, I thought it might be "Daphne".

Probably wrong.   :-[
