If you try the Great War Forum, there are some wizards with numbers there who may help with an answer.  The soldier's name will help, too.

When did he enlist, and in which regiment? My father also b1899 put his age up by 3 years and enlisted in 1915 "because he was bored"!He certainly relieved his boredom over the next 3 1/2 years.

Yes this is what i'm trying to find out. The man concerned, Percival. G. had an uncle, Percival. E, who was born in 1892. they lived in the same area, and would both have shown the same next of kin. I can't find  any service records for'E'  A case of borrowed identity , perhaps?

You have to be careful with the numbering in the Sussex Regiment it seems. If you search the National Archives medal site you find two men with the same number. Normally that means that different battalions had their own sequences. Although it is a surprise two used G/.

If you have the time, and Ancestry, you can search on the NA for G/2437? and G/2438?, and then try and find their service/pension record on Ancestry. You will then know when your man enlisted.

Best left to the experts in army numbers. 24000+ seems to high for him to have enlisted early in the war, but some regimental numbers were changed during 1917, and their size was considerably increased. The pension information will only apply if the soldier received a pension on discharge.

Just a thought - do you have this man's medal card? If he had a SWB [Silver War Badge] then the roll at Kew will give his dates of enlistment and discharge and - in about 40% of cases - his age at discharge as well.

Only territorial battalions were renumbered in 1917. They were given six-digit numbers. I am sure other regiments used G/ for (General) Service Battalions. But I cannot be certain. The problem is non-territorial battalions could do very much what they liked. So you do need a Sussex expert.
