george daniels- jamaica
« on: Tuesday 27 April 10 23:23 BST (UK) »
i've found my great great grandad george daniels on the england census from 1851 to 1881 and his birth is as being in the west indies around 1823. i know that he was black and was said to have been a stowaway to england aged about 16. from family i've been told he came from kingston, jamaica.
this is totally new territory so i'm unsure how to find him further back than i have. i've searched ancestry but not turned up anything so any help or suggestions would be really welcome :)
from what family have said he was told to run away by his mother when some men came to collect on a debt that the owner owed . he was said to have wrote to his mother for a while but stopped because he was frightened of being sent back. also i was told that he had whip marks on his back. i'm not 100% on the slavery timeline so any help with this would be great

It might be worth investing US$8 to gain  a month's full access to have a good dig around in JamaicanFamilySearch http://jamaicanfamilysearch.com/ - you never know.

They have a page dedicated to slaves and slavery with links to slave record transcriptions http://jamaicanfamilysearch.com/Samples2/slavery.htm

NB slavery was abolished in Jamaica in 1834 when all slaves became apprentices. All slaves received unrestricted freedom by 1838.
