Boxing trophy for E Ayers
« on: Wednesday 28 April 10 09:15 BST (UK) »
I have in my possesion a silver goblet that was presented to my uncle Ernest Ayers.
The inscription on it reads
N.F of B&B . S&S Camberley
Open boxing competition. 10th March 1921. Light Heavy Weight. Winner. E Ayres. (should be Ayers).
I have tried google search to no avail. Could anyone shed any light.
Thanks

Was your uncle in the Army? There was a Military Staff College in Camberley that had boxing matches. Perhaps he was in one of these tournaments?

There's also
Camberley Amateur Boxing Club
Turf Hill Road
Camberley
Surrey
GU15 4EL

They might be able to help?

Found these articles in the Times Newspaper;

1) 5 May 1921 - Imperial Services Boxing Championships at Oylmpia - Light Heavy Weight -  Lt. Ayres (RN) defeated in final.

2) 8 Jun 1921 - Army Boxing at Aldershot - Heavy Weight - Pte. Ayres (4th Hussar) defeated in final.

Not sure if one of these could be your uncle(?). Nothing with spelling of Ayers.

Thanks Les & Wilcoxon.

Not sure if he was in the army, will have to dig deeper. I believe he boxed for the MET police at some as he was policeman until he was hit by a car and lost both his legs and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

The inscription on trophy is quite specific.
N.F of B&B. S&S. I can only assume it was some national federation club of sorts. The date is also specific.  19th March 1921(not the 10th)

Regards
Len

If its possible the boxing bout may have been military related, you may like to have a look at this site

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:cvDec25Tqo4J:www.armymuseums.org.uk/museums/0000000108-Royal-Military-Academy-Sandhurst-Collection.htm+camberley+military&cd=32&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au

Its the Sandhurst Military Museum (formerly Camberley?), and there is a link for an email address for research inquiries on the right of that page. Might be worth a try if all else fails?

Then again, I could be completely off on the wrong track  ???
