Hi Clare

His service record appears to be on Findmypast - http://www.findmypast.co.uk/chelsea-pensioners-service-records-collection-search-start.action

When reading his record any service before the age of 18 did not count towards pension.

Army recruitment into the infantry was a bit complicated in the 1870s. He probably joined a Brigade Depot, and was then transferred to a line regiment after training. The number of which (ie "xxth regiment") you should google.

There was a large Military hospital at Netley (put Wiki: Netley into Google)

Also did you know he was in a Childrens home in the 1861 and 71 census's

Ive just looked at his very damaged Military record on Ancestry and he was still serving in 1891 and got a certificate for some sort of weapon in 1898.

On his Military History Sheet the last line reads

Home          XX 4/91           31/12 XX (cant read it)   Years 11 Days 350

Which would make his discharge somewhere around March 1903

Closest death registration I can find, birth is a little bit out though

Robert Suggitt died aged 39 Hartlepool RD Mar qtr 1903 10a 74

Hope I have the correct Richard Suggett there was only one other his middle name was Samuel and no sign of serving in the Military.

Anyway hope I havent led you up the garden path and given you false info, anyway I had fun looking.

Thank you so much for the information, yes, I have his records for the boys home, his brothers were also in their with him, & I'm pretty sure he had a sister named Mary Ann also in the same home.
