Anyone access to primary records for West Grinstead
« on: Thursday 29 April 10 06:19 BST (UK) »

        Am a tad puzzled.
A marriage for Elizabeth Bennett 1779 West Grinstead.
The IGI has a submitted record to George Sayers
The Sussex Marr index CD has George Fairs.
Both have the same date 28 Sep 1779.
What are the chances of being the same fellow.
        Is it an accent thing?
I found a BP for a George Sayers 1752 on theSFHG
I thought perhaps a look at the actual PR maybe
        needed

Dear Eds,

I can't access the primary records but can just to throw into the pot, that the marriage details were transcribed as -

George Fairs to Elizabeth Bennett.
Just in case you didnt have them; Witnesses, William Crow and Richard Stiles. (Richard was a witness at quite a few weddings there around the time). Same date as you have given.

The first Sayers marriage in the transcript for the Church of St George, West Grinstead, was for a Lydia Sayers to Henry Mitchell in 1796.

In 1805 there was a marriage there of an Ann Sayers to a William Weller which was witnessed by a George Sayers and a William Gratwick.

Would it help readers if you indicated where you think he was baptised?

          Dear OneBigFamily
          Ta muchly for your import.
I found that Bp for George in 1752 in West Grinstead.
Sorry I didn't make that more clearly.
          Ann Sayers is his daughter.
Am now wondering if the letter "f" was mistranscribed,
sometimes the "s" looked liked one.

With regards to the letter "f" I thought the same, but I wasnt convinced that a "y" could be misread as "i".  ... Difficult one. :-\

The transcript showed baptism of George Sayers on the date you gave as son of Henry and Rachel Sayers, no other details marked.

There also seemed to be a Fairs family recorded in the transcripts, so would be tempted to believe that "Fairs" meant "Fairs" :(
