Who was William COTTON?
« on: Friday 30 April 10 19:20 BST (UK) »
A William Cotton was named as the father on the birth certificate of Caleb Stevens, born Winsford, Somerset on 10 October 1842,  mother Mary Stevens.
Caleb was baptised on 22 January 1843 at Winsford as Caleb Cotton Stevens, mother Mary Stevens, spinster of Winsford.
I have been unable to locate Caleb, Mary or William on the 1851 and 1861 census. Caleb is on the 1871 census at Kingsbrompton (now Brompton Regis) a saddler aged 28.

Many questions are raised - was William a local man or a visitor; were Mary and William in domestic service together, if so where?  Was William a member of the gentry?  Could they have been abroad for the two missing censuses?

Perhaps these questions will never be answered but it would be good to know.

Have you found either William or Mary in 1841?
Does the birth cert not show an occupation for William? If it does this may help in tracking Williwm down.

Thanks Mort,

I suppose I should have checked christyb's previous posts - wastes a lot of searching time when more than one post on similar subject and no links are given

No there is no occupation shown for William.  I attach extract from the birth certificate.
There are so many Mary Stevens and William Cottons in 1841, I have been trying to find them at the same location but no luck so far.
