I got a bit carried away Dettori28 as I went back to find the Father of Nicholas and back and back and back ;D
Never did find him!

1881 Census
Croft Terrace,
Egremont, Cumberland
RG11/5192/96/32

Margaret BOWNESS, 69, Head, Widow, Laundress/Domestic servant, born Whitehaven
NICHOLAS Bowness, 29, Son, Mar, Iron ore miner, born Whitehaven
Jane Bowness, 27, Wife/Nicholas, Mar, born Montgomeryshire, Wales
William Bowness, 29, Son, Mar, Iron ore miner, born Whitehaven
William E Bowness, ( says Son, 4mths, should be Grandson I would think) born Egremont
John T BRIGGS, 17, Grandson, Unm, Iron ore miner, born Egremont
Robert KETCHEN, 38, Boarder, Iron ore miner, born Whitehaven
Ann BRIGGS, 14, Grand/daug, born Kinniside
All born in Cumberland except Jane

Marriage;
Nicholas BOWNESS, December 1880, Newtown, 11b 349
On the same page Jane EVANS
NOTE, A  Family Tree has her as Mary Jane LISTER but as no Marriage info.
I think this is more likely as the Marriage is in Wales.
Childs Birth Cert would be needed to confirm Mothers maiden name.

Oh they ARE Twins ;D

Household nearby has;
Joseph BOWNESS, 82, Head, W, Pauper/formerly Mariner, born Whitehaven

All down with just initials
There is also a M Bowness aged 8 also on the page.

Last one ;D

I think this is them in 1841.

1841 Census
Bell Place, New Lowther St,

HO107/

Margaret BOWNESS, 27, Shopkeeper
Joseph, 4
Margaret, 4mths
Joseph Bowness, 73, Mariner
Mary MURPHY, 54
Margaret Murphy, 22mths
All born in County

Looks like Joseph IS the Father in law.
Maybe Mr Bowness was away at sea.

Trish :)

Wow Wozzle, Geoff and Trish, thank you ever so much, must have tried loads of spelling variations for 1901 & never found them last night. After a quick dash from one end of the country to the other today, I arrive to find this lovely surprise. Greatly appreciated.

Trish, thanks a million, trying to surprise a new friend with her family history, she will be amazed when its all put together. Have to re-read all the information you posted. At a quick glance it looks as if I am also looking for a marriage of a Bowness to Margaret according to the 1841 census you found. I know that Thomas was married in Dec 1917 to Hannah Fisher (I have also found his children - my friends father etc) Thomas then went off to Canada in 1924. Although I've found a Form 30a, have'nt actually found the passenger list for the Montroyal. (This is of interest because I think he may have been part of a group from Cleator Moor,  Cumberland that also included my husbands grandfather - small world !!)  Thomas did intend to permanently live there but as far as I can tell he must have returned & died in Cumberland 1931. I can see from Egremont Cemetery Records that alot of the Bowness family are buried at Egremont.  You are a star, many thanks  ;D
