lundi 14 : Je descends en ville ZUARA - première ville où je fais de l'occupation - aspect désolé - Je cherche partout une pipe - introuvable - retour au camp

mardi 15 : pas de ravitaillement - La ville de Zuara est consignée à la troupe - Des soldats ont été tués par la population - Vais à Zouara quand même - Fais ma demande pour aller dans l'armée anglaise

mercredi 16 : Je me promène sur la grève, trouve un avion italien d'abattu (FIAT) ainsi qu'un dépôt de munitions - vide les caisses pour en faire des sièges - vais prendre un bain - passe le restant de la journée dans ma tente - Je me ... - Cafard !!!

jeudi 17 : trouve le temps très long - vais à la plage - le moral commence à tomber

vendredi 18 : Je vais à Zouara voir quelques amis anglais (Sud-Africains)

samedi 19 : Je vais à la pêche à la dynamite avec quelques camarades du camp et un ami anglais

dimanche 20 : D... de descendre à Zouara.Je ne peux pas aller à la messe

à part ma demande pour l'A. (= armée) anglaise, cette semaine n'a rien apporté de nouveau

lundi 21 : Ste-Touche. Je suis payé comme non spécialisé au taux de (430) par semaine

mardi 22 : je vais à la N.A.I.A.FI de Sabratha. Je trouve de tout - ramène des cigarettes pour les camarades

mercredi 23 : Je vais avec mon camarade Camus à Tripoli (il pleut). Sale ville - aspect désolé - La vie est horriblement chère, heureusement qu'il y a des clubs anglais (voir note)

jeudi 24 : passe la journée à me reposer - le soir je prends la garde

vendredi 25 : me lève à 10 h du matin - Le sirocco se lève et souffle - du sable plein la tente - le soir, le tout ne s'est pas arrêté. Je me couche tôt - avec un peu de cafard

samedi 26 : le vent souffle toujours très fort - impossible de sortir de la tente - faisons la causette avec un camarade - le soir j'irai pour la 1ère fois

dimanche 27 : rentre dans le bureau pour passer le temps - tape à la machine - Il fait chaud - le vent s'est calmé - Mangeons très tard

A Tripoli je vais voir un Cne (capitaine?) de (l'... S) qui me donne le conseil d'aller voir le colonel Knox. Où est le colonel Knox - Je cherche - Le Général de Gaulle vient nous visiter - J'apprends que le prince de Piémont est à Alger

Mon. 14: I went down to the town of Zuara – the first town I have occupied – desolate looking. Looked everywhere for cigarettes(?) – none to be found – back to camp

Tues.15: no provisions – the town of Zuara given over to the troop –Some soldiers were killed by the inhabitants. Go to Zuara all the same –Ask to join the English Army.

Wed. 16: Walk on the beach, find an Italian plane brought down, also a munitions dump. Empty the cases to make seats – take a dip – passe the rest of the day in my tent. Am depressed(?)

Thurs.17: find the time long- go to the beach – morale becoming low

Fri. 18: Go to Zouara to see some English friends (S. Africans)

Sat. 19;Go fishing with explosives with comrades  from the camp and an English friend

Sun.20; Forbidden (defense?) to go to Zouara. Can’t go to Mass
Except for my request for the Eng. Army, tis week has brought no new developments

Mon 21; St. Touche. I was paid as a non-specialist at the rate of 430 per week.

Tues. 22; Went to the N.A.A.F.I. at Sabratha. Found everything there – brought back cigarettes for my comrades

Wed. 23:Went with my comrade Camus to Tripoli (it’s raining). Filthy town- desolate – Life is dreadfully expensive, luckily there are English clubs (see note)

Thurs. 24: Spent the day resting. Guard duty in the evening.

Fri. 25: Got up at 10am – The sirocco wind  is blowing – tent full of sand – still not stopped by evening. Went to bed early – a bit depressed

Sat. 26: the wind is still strong – impossible to leave the tent – chatted with a comrade in the evening I will go out for the 1st time.

Sun.27: went back to the office to pass the time – typed – It’s hot – the wind has dropped – We eat very late

At Tripoli I go to see a Captain(?) of (l’…S) who advises me to see Col. Knox. Where is Col. Knox  - I  search. Gen. de Gaulle came to visit us. I learn that the Prince of Piedmont is in Algiers

There is only one last week until the diary reverts to English which I posted here originally. I would however like to review some of the missing weeks and ask again for your help as I believe there may be some important information missing.

mardi 29 : adopte un nouveau locataire dans ma tente (AMHT). Faisons 4 kil. le nez au vent flairant du "pinard". Retour "Bredouille"

mercredi 30 : Faisons 15 km dans les sables pour trouver du "pinard". Je réussis à en trouver 1 goutte. ... ... fournir à ...

jeudi 1 : Je fais les exercices de nage sous l'eau. ...

vendredi 2 : Anniversaire de ma mère (43 ans). Je pense à elle. Je suis réveillé, il est 5 h du matin. J'ai reçu ordre de rejoindre l'armée anglaise. Mes camarades parachutistes de Fez sont affectés dans la D.C.A.

samedi 3 : on the road to Tripoli. Terrible wind (Sirocco)

That's wonderful. I'd like to finish with two weeks in May - and my information is that he chooses a code name during this time, so I'd like to see if that's recorded.

mardi 4 : Gritteret (?) m'annonce qu'une jeune fille veut me connaître - ne peux la voir

mercredi 5 : ne peux pas la voir, ne m'enchante guère

jeudi 6 : exécute mon 9e saut. T.V.B. : (= ? tout va bien). Suis présenté à la jeune fille Mlle Jeannette de la Pierre. Affreux !!! laisse tout tomber (?)

vendredi 7 : exament peloton n° 2 catastrophe !!

dimanche 9 : sors en ville - assiste au défilé de la victoire de l'hôtel de la Paix chez la R.A.F.

Tues. 29: have a new tenant in my tent (AMHT). Did 4 in search of  plonk.  Return empty-handed.

Wed. 30: 15km over  the sands to find plonk. I succeeded in finding a drop ….   to supply to ….

Thurs. 1: I did underwater swimming exercises.

Fri.2: My mother’s birthday (43 yrs). I am thinking of her. I am awake, it is 5a.m.. I have received orders to join the English Army. My fellow parachutists from Fez are destined for the  D.C.A.(?)

Mon. 3 May:  Return as interpreter to the command group of _______ of the Regiment

Tues.4: Gritteret tells me a young woman would like to meet me – am unable to see her.

Wed. 5:  Can’t see her,  not very pleased about it

Thurs. 6: Made my 9th jump. T.V.B. Was introduced to the young lady Mlle Jeannette de la Pierre. Dreadful!!!  Forget it! (laisse tout tomber = let it all drop)

Fri 7: Platoon inspection no. 2  ….. a disaster!

Sun. 9: go out in town. – take part in the victory parade from the hotel de la Paix to the R.A.F.

Mon. 10 : return to normal work

Tues.11: Morning – make my 10th jump. T.V.B.
I am still _____ as interpreter

Fri. 14: Arrival of a Douglas and a Fortress.

Excellent - thank you both so much, I really appreciate your help.

In November 1943 when he was flown to the UK, he was interviewed by the Royal Patriotic School - this was more of an interrogation to determine if he was to be trusted or not. The interview states:
14. At the beginning of May, a call was made for members of the parachtist corps who might have something to fear if they fell into the hands of the Germans during the war. JONES put his name in on account of his past record, and on the 20th May about 27 placed similarly with himself were sent to Algiers to the recruiting bureau of the French area where they were provided with an opportunity of adopting another name. JONES said that he chose Pierre DARMONT, the real name of the French film actor Pierre BLANCHARD. He was told to wait until further instruction but the change of name was not put through before he left, and he did not hand in the extract from his Livret Militaire which he carried with him. "

I'd really like to confirm this and if possible to confirm the name he chose, as it may be the his code name for his MI6 operations. I think the diary mentions this change of name on Friday 24th May. I can just about get the gist of being 22 years old and a name - but it looks like Jacques.
