Irish Civil War/ War of Independence Help!!
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 21:08 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm looking for some help...

Does anyone know if there exists a list of participants in the Civil War or War of Independence?

My GG Grandfather was rumoured to have died during one or the other of these events. His wife (my GG Grandmother) often said she had a medal somewhere for something he did and its believed that she received a pension also. My GG Grandfather was also said to have fought in WWI so Im knee deep in rumours and not one bit of proof.

Help!! :)

Hello

When was your GG Grandfather alive? As the 2 wars were about a Century apart that would help you search the correct archive!

I don't know a lot about available resources but found this site through Go*gle search:

Assume you meant American War of Independence  ;)

Best Wishes
Morgan

Welcome to Rootschat, valkane2003. Since you posted your query on the Dublin board it was perfectly clear you meant the civil war in Ireland.
There are lots of people here familiar with Irish records and history - perhaps if you post his name and the information you have so far we might be able to help you find more information or suggest where to look next.
The 1911 Irish census is online (free) and that might be the first place to look-

His name was Patrick Quinn and his fathers name was James Quinn... These I have from Patricks marriage cert (he married Teresa Mills) and his daughter Teresas birth cert (my GGrandmother). I cant be 100% sure when he was born. One story says he died in a grenade incident in 1920's but I cant find a death cert and he is definitely dead by 1939 (my Grandmothe confirmed this).

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated as I'm totally lost  ;)

Any idea when your grandmother Teresa Quinn was born? When her parents married and what was Patrick's occupation?

Patrick married Teresa Mills 31st December 1915. Patrick declares his occupation as "Soldier" and his fathers occupation as Labourer. Their daughter Teresa was born c1920. They married in St. Catherines Church on Meath Street. Both were local to the area.

To start with I've found Teresa Mills in 1911 census with her family living at 38 Meath Street:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Merchant_s_Quay/Meath_St_/69643/

Several Quinns also on Meath Street but Patrick's not there. Perhaps someone else will have better luck finding him there but I'll let you know if I find more indormation.
