Can anyone shed any light on these census entries for DOB, please?
« on: Sunday 02 May 10 10:43 BST (UK) »

These are the census - place of birth entries given for Louisa Jane Cooke/Whittingham (nee Cooke).  It could be Malta or South America.

There is a Louisa Jane Cooke born in Malta 1868/69 according to the Army Chaplains birth Indices 1796-1880.

Grossisle US British Subject  1891
Malta British   1901
Gross Isle S of South America 1911

Any opinions gratefully received,
Abiam2

Hi

I can't comment on the S American bit but would it be the Island of Gozo in the Maltese archipelago or just the largest of the islands in the archipelago

Hi Abiam  :)

Have looked at the handwritten pages for 1891 and 1901 and they definitely have "Grossisle, US, British Subject" and "Malta, British" respectively.  ???

Bit of a difference!!

there's a Grosse Isle in Canada

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grosse_Isle,_Quebec

and one in Michigan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grosse_Ile_Township,_Michigan

Though the Michigan would be out of the picture if you think Louisa's father was in the military.

I remember having a look around in relation to your other post about her, and there was also a 9 year old Charles Cooke in Coppenhall Monks who was born in America. In 1881, he was living very close to the Whittingham family. RG11/ 3539 folio 81 pg 44. In 1891 (from memory) he gave his place of birth as Quebec. Could be a coincidence?

Hello all,
Thank you for your help.  But I am now totally confused!  Now looks as though I need to learn more about Quebec.  And find where Louisa's parents are in 1881.  And if Louisa is from Ireland???  What on earth would make her say that?  We do think Charles jnr and Louisa are siblings don't we?
A lot more digging I think,
Thanks again,
Abiam2
