Place name in Kintail 1832
« on: Monday 03 May 10 14:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I can make out everything except where the baptism took place, can anyone help? I'm not familiar with the area and am hoping that someone may recognise the name as the nearest I've found is Aultachruine. Thank you.

Best I can come up with is Auchindoun in Moray, or Auchindrain in Argyll, both checkable on Google.

Thanks Tony, both are a fair distance from Keppoch but they could have been on the move at that time.

It does look like Auchindoun to me. Where is the record from? As he was 9 months when he was baptised, is it possible that he may have been born elsewhere and the family then moved on again after the baptism?

Looking again, I think Josey's suggestion is also a strong possibility. The configuration of letters after the "d" is difficult to decipher but could well be "rean" (Why couldn't they print - life would be much easier  ;D )

Carole, the record is an OPR entry for Kintail. In the 1861 - 1901 Census Ewen states he was born in Kintail each time.
It does look as if it could say Auchindrean Josey.

Is this the family in Camusunary, Inverness is 1851?

Farquar McRae 60
Catherine McRae 55
Mary 26
Duncan 24
Ewen 22
John 20
Jane 15
Thomas 13
Donald 10
Ann Grant 23
Christina Matthews 22
Charles McKinnon 22

Can't find them on the 1841. Perhaps they were on their way to Inverness in 1832 when Ewen was baptised? Auchindrean is south of Ullapool.

Does the baptism record refer to Alex McRae as being Farquar Roy's son?
