WW1 Soldiers in 1901 census
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 11:22 BST (UK) »
In researching the lives of WW1 soldiers, I have come across examples where the man joined the army 1900 or earlier, so should be in 1911 and 1901 censuses

If I want to see a soldier in 1911 census I can look in "Overseas Military" on my  FindMyPast subscription which is only to the 1911

I have an Ancestry subscription that covers 1901 cenus.

My question is "Can I find Overseas Military" on the Ancestry 1901 results. If not, is there anywhere else to find them. Or were overseas soldiers even enumerated in 1901.

I don't know if I have tried and failed to find what I want on Ancestry  :-[

So if for example the soldier was thought to be in South Africa, Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), there would be nothing in 1901 census to confirm or deny that ?

correct - a lot of 'missing' 1901 seem to be attributed to the military, Boer War II in particular.

Winston Spencer Churchill included  ;)

I am on a learning curve here.

As an alternative to the census there are the Boer War Medals. Is there a way of getting an index online, as with Medal Index Cards for WW1, which give a man's service number and what medals he earned

I assume one can extract a lot about a man's movements as there appear to be a lot of medals awarded in different locations.

Yes, I saw that but his offer dated from 2006, and I wondered if more had gone online with the indexes

But I think you are right, I'll try a new thread on the general idea on how to get that info online
