Hi
Help! I've been trying to find what happened to my grt grt grandfather's elder sister, Martha Hanmer nee Stokes, and her family for a long long time now. I have them in the 1841 census in Wolverhampton but then they seem to disappear.
This is what I have:
Martha Stokes baptised 2 February 1817, St Martins, Shropshire. Parents - Edward Stokes and Catherine m.s. Jones
Marriage: Martha Stokes and William Hanmer, Dec q, 1837, Oswestry, vol 18, page 192
Birth of daughter Mary Ann: Mary Ann Hanmer Sept q, 1838, Wolverhampton, vol 17, page 292
Birth of son Edward Hanmer: Edward Hanmer Mar q, 1840, Wolverhampton, vol 17, page 332
1841 Census:
26 Oxford Street, Bilston, Wolverhampton
HO107/1001/3/6/5
William Hanmer, 28, miner
Martha Hanmer, 24
Edward Hanmer, 1
Mary Ann Hanmer, 2*
Edward Hanmer, 13 (William's brother)
John Stoakes, 19, miner (Martha's brother - my 2 x grt grandfather)
Richard Jones, 18, miner
All born outside county except the children
* Mary Ann is also listed in St Martins with her grandmother, Catherine Stokes HO107/916/2/8/9
I've also found this death:
Edward Hanmer Sept q, 1841, Wolverhampton, vol 17, page 174
Most of the Stokes family moved from Wolverhampton in the 1840s - some back to St Martins and Chirk, Denbighshire and others to Normanton, West Yorks.
I've searched for the Hanmers on subsequent censuses and BMDs but can't find a real hit. There is a Mary Hanmer, aged 12 in Shropshire in the Ellesmere workhouse in 1851 but this is not likely to be Mary Ann as there was a birth for a Mary Hanmer in Ellesmere in 1839.
There was a cholera epidemic in that area in the 1840s I believe but I've not found any death certs. I don't think they would have emigrated and I've not found anything so far. I have all Martha's siblings accounted for and they're not with them.
I'd be grateful for any leads.
Thanks
Gadget
