Stratton Street Swindon
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 21:07 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know whereabouts there was a butchers shop in what is given on census as Stratton Street but I assume is now Stratton Road?
I have a butcher ancestor there in 1841/1851 and maybe later I don't have later census info.  The name was Robert Chowles.

Hi,

I can see on the 1861 census that Robert Chowles is listed as a butcher.
1871 - Return Butcher (not sure what that is)
1881 - Farmer & Dealer
All the censuses show that Robert was living with his wife Mary at Stratton Street.

If you look at the Online Historical Directories for Wiltshire 1885,  Robert Chowles is shown as a Beer Retailer, Stratton Street. Then in 1867 as a Cattle Dealer. Unfortunately I've not been able to find a Butcher's shop on Stratton Street.

Stratton street is now known as Ermin street. Modern day Stratton road is in a totally different area.

Thanks very much for looking him up for me  :)
I was assuming he lived at a butchers shop but seems that wasn't the case!  He had a few occupations didn't he from beer retailer to cattle dealer  :o

Aaah Ermin Street of course, I was getting confused with Swindon Road (I think!)

The road from the White Hart to the County Ground [football stadium] was [and is, although it is no longer a continuous road] Oxford rd, Stratton rd, Shrivenham rd,. Swindon rd, runs from a junction with Stratton rd, at the Green bridge to Ermin st. [what was  Stratton st,][by the way there was a butchers shop in Ermin st, in the 1950s when I was at school in Kingsdown, only a 100 years difference]

Cheers for that.

I like to go and look at these places and see if I can find them (or where they once were)
Not had much luck so far, either the streets are no more or the houses have been turned into exotic pet shops  :D
Even that I believe is gone now (Morley Street in the town)  A lot of mine were in the town centre close to the railway works.

At least with towns you get a road name and number, villages are far more random I have found.

The pubs are still there, the Crown, the Wheatsheaf and the Ladder [it was the Jacobs Ladder] so you can get an idea of the position from the closeness of the pubs and also street junctions. Most of the old buildings are still in place in that area I think, although it is not exactly a village no more. Google Stratton St, Margaret. [probably on google street view]

I was actually born in Upper Stratton and have lived in that area most of my life.  Lower Stratton I know less well but I have been past the Ladder and know the Crown corner.
Used to go that way to a cemetary but always by car.  Might be worth having a mooch round on foot.  I believe you can't drive down there now anyway.
