Where is modern day Bervie
« on: Wednesday 05 May 10 10:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have discovered many ancestors in the last 24 hrs coming from Bervie.

Can someone please tell me whether Bervie is now called Inverbervie or point me in the right direction with a map as having googled it, it doent seem to come up.  There is also a Bervie in Montrose and I am not sure whether that would have been the Bervie I want.

The era concerned is 1811 onwards.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Undiscovered Scotland says that Inverbervie is 'more simply known as Bervie'.

Hi
I just Googled 'Bervie cemetery' and found a page dedicated to that cemetery

which says that you can contact them/him for further details of people buried there.

Good luck

Joy :)

Inverbervie is the town (locally called Bervie) while Bervie is the name of the Parish which includes the fishing village of Gourdon 1 mile south.  Are you looking for a burial at the cemetery near Gourdon (opened in 1899) or at the Old Churchyard in Kirkburn, Inverbervie ?  A friend and I surveyed the latter several years ago and recorded all the memorial inscriptions.  Please let me know if this could be of help.

Isles.

One of the best sites for finding out about burials in the North East is the Aberdeen & North East Scotland Family History Society's online Monumental Inscriptions database.  It can be accessed at the following - www.anesfhs.org.uk/databank/miindex/miindex.php

Also, there is another site which details the locations of burial grounds in the North East at www.abdnet.co.uk/burialgrounds/

Both are well worth a look.

In order to give you a better idea of the burials at the Old Kirkyard at Bervie I'll quote from the booklet which I produced:-

"Index of Interments - Old Churchyard, Kirkburn, Inverbervie
This index has been compiled from the Registers of Interments, the first covering the period 9 Jan 1864 to 2 Sep 1892.  It is written on a jotter and appears to have been the work of the gravedigger.  A blank exists between 1892 and 1898.  When the new cemetery at Gourdon was opened in 1899 only those who already held ground at the Old Churchyard were permitted to be interred there.  This second register extends from 18 May 1899 to 18 Oct 1934 when the last interment took place.
Names inscribed on the gravestones have not been included as these have been transcribed and indexed in a seperate book, along with a plan of the Churchyard."

There is no marker for George Falconer Millar or his wife Elizabeth Wyllie but there is one for their son Robert born 8 Sep 1815 and his wife Clementina Will who were  married on 5 Nov 1841:-

"1848  Erected by Robert Millar, mason in Bervie in memory of his son Robert d. 24 Jul 1847 in his 5th year; Mary d. 16 Jul 1850 in her 1st year; Clementina d. 7 Apr 1863 aged 18; Alexander d. Glasgow 13 Sep 1888 aged 42; said Robert Millar d. 20 Jan 1893 aged 77; his wife Clementina Will d. 8 Jan 1894 aged 71."

Another stone:  "Erected by Alexander James, mason, Bervie in memory of his wife Clementina Millar who died 7 Apr 1863 aged 18."

Alexander James went on to marry my great-aunt Mary Ann Burness in 1864 and I believe they emigrated to South Africa.  I hope this is of some help.
