Am I going to have problems ?
« on: Wednesday 05 May 10 15:51 BST (UK) »
I know that, often in Germany, information is only provided to people who can provide proof of descent.

Both my grandmother's parents were born in Germany (1852 & 1858)...their families coming to Britain shortly thereafter. My grandmother's birth in Britain was never registered  (they only bothered with the boys !).....so I can't obtain a birth certificate for her.

Will this prove to be a big problem & is there any way round it ?

Hi there

No, it shouldn't be a problem, so long as you know where the family came from. There are restrictions on access to German documentation but these apply only to the modern era (due to concerns about personal privacy, fraud etc). Copies of documents from the 1850s are well outside the modern era range.

So if you know the town or village they came from, and preferably the religion, you should be able to obtain documentation.

I sent to Germany a few years ago for an 1866 marriage record and birth details of the couple (born 1844) merely stating I was their great-great-grandchild and the information was sent back very quickly- I did not have exact dates but gave birthdate of 1st child and estimated dates for the bride and groom.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
