Not sure what to do
« on: Thursday 06 May 10 20:09 BST (UK) »
Im not sure where to post this, but I feel this is so important. Am posting this on behalf of one of my friends.

2 weeks ago, my friend bought a lovely little cottage in a lovely village (Not saying which one to protect him), from an elderly lady. While going through all the junk he left in the attic, he stumbled across some old books. One was a big heavy book full of baptisms, marriages and burials from 1670 to 1750.

What advice can you give? Its from the local church. And I doubt anyone knows of its existance. Is he going to be in trouble for declaring it????

Why not parcel it up securely and leave it at the church with an anonymous note saying what the contents are and apologising for keeping it (just so they don't think it's a bomb!!)

I think the local record office would be delighted to have it and they would be able to assess its importance.  I don't think your friend need worry about being "in trouble" and it would be better for the record office to know where the book has been - that too is part of its history.

I'm sorry for sounding daft, but I don't understand something you've written - must be the excitement of voting today !

Should the part I've highlighted in red .. read she left in the attic, as opposed to he left ? If the elderly lady left it - why would he be in trouble ? If he found it in his own attic, how did he come by it ?

Well if someone from the parish in question was to see this post then they know exactly who it is. Doubt if this village has more than 100 people.
