If important things go "walkabout" then turn up years later, it  is not in anyone's interest to make a lot of trouble about how they went missing because that will put people off returning them - no-one will persue a little old lady over a missing parish register.  Please do encourage your friend to hand in the volume - it may contain that missing information that someone's been looking for for years!

ADDED: Yes, the local record office would be best, I think

Sounds as though this book is an official register in which case it should go back to the church or the appropriate record office. Once it has been returned  to a 'safe' repository then the details (when and where etc.) should be made public, otherwise if it went missing, who would know??
How about listing the surnames???

Hi David.

Although I am sure the Vicar would be pleased to have the Book,
the Church would not have the right conditions to store it.

I would have suggested the Record Office, who do.

Not long ago when an old school was being demolished the
School Registers were thrown into a skip outside the building.
Luckily someone noticed them and took them to straight to the
local Record Office.

It is as others note a resource that must be kept for prosperity.

Brilliant find by the way by whoever.

Sandy
