Fleet and Dibden Families
« on: Friday 07 May 10 03:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am interested to see if any rootschat members are researching these families?

I have came to a grinding end to a Lucy Fleet who had children to a William Dibden.
The children were born in Bramshaw, Hampshire between 1814 and 1828.

Would be most grateful if anyone would be able to check the parish records for the birth of Lucy Fleet and William Dibden, they do not show on the I.G.I.  Also if there was a marriage between this couple, as I think the children were born out of wed-lock according to an old document written by their son, saying he was a chance child!

Thanks

Do you know where Lucy or William were born?  I'm going to the Records office today and will be happy to do a quick search if you can narrow it down?

The Bramshaw register transcript shows the following children:

George Dibden/Fleet, bapt 28 Feb 1813, parents William Dibden & Lucy Fleet, baseborn
Eliza Dibden/Fleet b 20 Nov bap 18 Dec 1814, parents William Dibden & Lucy Fleet, baseborn, buried 7 Jun 1829 aged 14 (as Fleet)
Ann Fleet, baptised 14 Jul 1816, parents William Dibden & Lucy Fleet ? buried 15 Sep 1833 age 17 as Dibden
Harriet Fleet, bapt 17 Aug 1818, parents William & Lucy Fleet, ? buried 23 Feb 1829 aged 10
William Fleet, bapt 30 Apr 1820, mother Lucy
Lucy Fleet, bapt 17 Mar 1822, mother Lucy
Joseph Fleet, bapt 8 Jun 1824, mother Lucy
Maria Fleet, bapt 17 Jan 1827, mother Lucy, buried 6 Feb 1833 aged 6
Louisa Dibden/Fleet bapt 31 Aug 1828, parents William Dibden & Lucy Fleet, baseborn

I also found the following, but according to the 1841 census, they belong to a different William and Lucy, and are in Eling in 1841:

Mark Dibden bapt 24 Feb 1835, parents William & Lucy
Andrew Arthur Dibden bapt 8 Mar 1835, parents William & Lucy
William Dibden, bapt 9 Jan 1837, parents William and Lucy  ? buried 12 Feb 1837, infant

I can't find anything for Lucy Fleet, but there are a couple of possibles for William:

William Dibden bapt 25 Dec 1786 Sherfield English, father John.
William Dibbden bapt 25 Oct 1789 in Bramshaw, parents Joseph & Christian.

The father's name of Joseph and the appearance of Joseph as one of the children's names may be a clue.

Given the proximity to Wiltshire, you need to look there too.  No sign of a marriage for William & Lucy.

Do you have any of the family on the 1841 census?

I did check the first couple of baptisms at the records office today - no more information than Nell has given - it doesn't look as though the parents married.

Thank you very much.  Just look at all those little lives that were lost.  Not to sound silly, is Baseborn a place?

All I know about the family is that William Fleet, born 1820 was transported to Australia.  (I have some records kindly found for me on the Australian board).

Where Lucy Fleet was born?,  remains a mystery, and now two possible William Dibdens!   But the William with father Joseph is a strong possibility, as I know he came from Bramshaw.

I may have a feeling Joseph Fleet came to New Zealand in 1874 age 40 his wife Sarah age 39, and children all born in Hampshire.  William also made his way to New Zealand after release.

Would be interested to see if Joseph Fleet shows up on the 1841 census., 1851.

Kind Regards
Suzy W

May be under Dibden?  William went by the name Fleet, other's by Dibden.
May not be our Joseph who came to NZ, ten years out in age.

May be under Dibden

If only.  I've tried both names and possible variants and can't be sure of any of them - wrong place of birth, age not quite right, not with any other family member to be certain.   :(

Baseborn means the child was illegitimate - which is why I think you're unlikely to find a marriage for this couple :(
